In the mid-1950s Albert retired from farming, and they moved to Sioux Falls,

where Marie worked at the Crippled Children's Hospital.

Albert & Marie returned to Yankton County in the 1960s and were residents of Yankton for the remainder of their lives, but they traveled frequently between the West Coast and Wisconsin to spend time with their children and grandchildren.

Their children gave them 11 grandchildren, two of whom died in infancy.
